SL Amateur Champion Chanaka wins in style
Sri Lanka’s Amateur Golf Champion Chanaka Perera played quality golf firing a scintillating six under par final-round to win the Lectra Grand Prix 2019 – October Edition worked off at the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club (NEGC) during the weekend.
Playing alongside the co-leaders after round-3, B. A. Sanjeewa and local star Vinoth Kumar, Perera asserted his superiority firing a series of seven birdies on the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 8th, 14th, 17th 18th.
In addition, an Eagle was thrown in for good measure on the 10th putting pressure on the co-leaders to fall apart and eventually Perera marched on to a magnificent victory by a comfortable 12 strokes clear of the field. Chanaka appears to have turned the corner from amateur champion to the professional scoring track completing the four rounds of five under par.
Chanaka’s six under par 65 was despite dropping three
bogeys on the 11th, 12th and 15th holes which confirms his capacity of scoring even better since he was nine under in eight holes.
Chanaka received a special training in Singapore after winning the Sri Lanka Amateur Championship earlier this year.
The meticulous training programme conducted by the Sri Lanka Golf Union (SLGU) in association with the Ministry of Sports and the assistance rendered by the NOC seems to have borne fruit with the fitness, mental strength and
all else falling in to place. The competition among the National players is healthy and several aspects of practice, gym training, nutrition supplement and other requirements are monitored closely by the Secretary SLGU and his team at Sri Lanka Golf (SLG).
Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka Men’s and Women’s Teams for the South Asian Games (SAG) Golf Championship continue training and our scheduled to take-wing shortly to Nepal with much expectation of medals.
