Time to Chill

-

While we are all familiar with the benefits that a massage can offer, it is not common knowledge that the use of topical analgesics (instead of the usual oil, lotion or cream), can play a very effective role in enhancing those benefits.

What are topical analgesics? These refer to pain killers in the form of creams, rubs, and sprays that are used on the skin over painful muscles or joints.

Also known as cold therapy, this is the local or general use of low temperatures for therapeutic purposes. Cryotherapy is widely used to relieve muscle pain, sprains and swelling

Topical analgesics have multiple benefits in massage therapy:

They target specific areas to relieve pain They aid in providing pain free movement The cooling and the re-warming of tissue stimulates the return of blood flow They are an easier option than using actual ice They can be used at home as well if needed

Topical analgesics work according to the Gate Control Theory of Pain. Rich in ingredients like menthol, these products stimulate specific sensory receptors in the skin, and by doing so, it in turn prevent other receptors from sending pain signals to the brain. These analgesics use cold therapy and heat therapy, and it is the former, also known as Cryotherapy that we bring into focus today.

What is Cryotherapy? Also known as cold therapy, this is the local or general use of low temperatures for therapeutic purposes. Cryotherapy is widely used to relieve muscle pain, sprains and swelling.

Topical Analgesics can be used at every stage of the massage:

Before - to reduce pain prior to manipulation of tissue, and ease pre-treatment apprehension During - if the client experiences soreness or pain during the session After - to relieve pain and tenderness, and keep the client pain free for hours following the massage
