THREE SHORT PLAYS PRESENTED BY SOMALATHA SUBASINGHE PLAY HOUSE

Somalatha Subasinghe Play House presents Three Short Plays once again on December 21 at 3.30 pm and 6.45 pm at the Namel Malini Punchi Theatre, Borella. The Three Short Plays (Is That You?, Delivery and Against Gravity) are acted by the young artistes who have successfully completed the Certificate in Acting programme 2019 conducted by Kaushalya Fernando. The programme is offered once a year and it provides a valuable platform to those who wants to learn the basics of acting on stage and screen. The Three short plays are originals in Sinhala written and directed by Chamila Priyanka and Nilaka Dahanayake, two new-wave theatre directors in Sri Lanka moulded at Somalatha Subasinghe Play House a few years ago. Chamila Priyanka studied theatre Directing at New York University with assistance from Fulbright scholarship. Nilanka is an emerging playwright and an actor on stage and television who has travel overseas to study different forms of theatre making. The three short plays depict on going social, cultural and economic challenges faced specially by the young generation in Sri Lanka. The dichotomy in lives, mismatch between the reality and expectations, social, economic and cultural pressures on people and the changing nature of the value system are discussed in these plays in a satirical manner. The play is suitable for anyone above 14 years of age. Somalatha Subasinghe Play House is one of the pioneering theatre institutes that nurtures and promotes young and new talents to the national stage since early 1980s. Over the years, Play House was able to train artistes with very competitive skills who are shining currently on stage, television, cinema and in academia. It is also the only institute in Sri Lanka to hold non-competitive annual theatre festivals for children and youth in Colombo since early 1980s.
