Let us resurrect Sri Lanka

I appeal to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to be another Lee Kuan Yew to the world.

In the context of the prevailing recession in the economy of the country, it is heartrending to think of the plight of the poor people who have to eke out a living with the paltry income they get.

‘The cost of living has gone up so high that they do not have enough money to buy even the food they need, leave aside other essentials,

I pray that you will be a strict and dedicated leader who will get this country out of the mess it has fallen into. Some people say that Sri Lanka is already a Failed State.

It is gladdening news to hear that the Cabinet has granted policy approval for the proposal presented by the Minister of Road and Highways to implement priority projects to construct overtaking lanes and for surface renewal of the whole road network to meet international standards.

Sir, look at the state of the roads in Colombo in the early morning and between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. on weekdays. Even poor people have to come to Colombo to attend to some of their needs. Sick people come to hospitals in Colombo by bus. these buses have to move at a slow speed because of the traffic.

Therefore, Sir, I hope you will get the Minister of Road and Highways to give priority to improve the road network in Colombo to meet international standards.

I appeal to the rich people of this country to help the poor in whatever way they can. If all the rich people respond millions of poor people can be relieved of their suffering without delay.

I practise what I preach. I have helped a few people to repair the roofs and raise the floor level of their houses to prevent water leaks into the house during rainy weather.

I also earnestly appeal to the politicians to turn over a new leaf and think of the country and its present plight and take action to develop the country without any further delay.

I beg the government employees to render their service efficiently to enable the President to take action to develop this country early and that is the only service they can render to the country. Tissa Jayatilaka Nugegoda
