A team from the University of Moratuwa won the 1st place at the premier IEEE BIBE 2019 International Brain Computer Interface Hackathon, held in Athens, Greece in October this year. The competition was organised by the BR41N.IO in conjunction with 19th IEEE International Conference on Bioinformatics and Bio engineering 2019.

The team from the University of Moratuwa consisted of Sanjaya Mallikarachchi and Dulith Chinthaka who are graduates from the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The project was carried out under the supervision of Dr. Thilina Lalitharatne, a senior lecturer attached to the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Moratuwa. During the Hackathon competition, the team proposed and implemented a project called “BMI.SAR”: Brain Signal Controlled Surgery Assistant Robot. In this project, the team proposed a wearable surgery assistant robot which is capable of providing desired tools and/or equipment to the doctor during a surgery. The robot can be commanded by the brain signals of the doctor. The team especially thanked members of the University of Moratuwa Brain Machine Interface (BMI) Research Group, members of the Bionics Lab and the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kapila Perera, Dean/ Faculty of Engineering, Prof. Nalin Wickramarachchi and Head/ Mechanical Engineering, Prof. Ruwan Gopura for their assistance given to attend this premier conference and the competition.
