- BY YOHAN PERERA AND D M WITHANAGE

The Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa said over the weekend that he would work towards forming an alliance with a number of other parties and will include the UNP in it.

Speaking at a public gathering in Biyagama on Saturday Mr. Premadasa said he would not sideline anyone in the UNP but form an alliance with everyone.

He would build up a modern progressive opposition which will support the government to fulfill all its people friendly programmes

“We want to work with everyone in the UNP as we do not want to divide the party for the purpose of securing the leadership in the party” Mr Premadsa said.

“Our objective should be to see that the UNP retains the number of seats it currently holds in Parliament. Therefore, I will do my utmost to see that the

UNP led alliance retains all its current MPS” he added.

However, he stressed that one should see to it that the UNP’S internal democracy is safeguarded.

Mr. Premadasa then reiterated that he would build up a modern progressive opposition which will support the government to fulfil all its people friendly programmes.

Referring to the statement’s that have been made by most of the government MPS that a two thirds majority is needed to bring about a change, Mr. Premadasa said such a majority is not needed to bring in some of the changes such as providing fertilizer free of charge. “The Government will not be able to get away by following get away tactics (Shape Niyayas),” he said.

“The Government should not work towards providing relief to people who are facing certain hardships,” while adding that people have begun breaking into shops to grab items such as onions which have gone up in price.
