National Organiser of the Samastha Lanka Givijana Sammelanaya Namal Karunarathna urged the government to take immediate steps to release the fertiliser used for other crops from the stores to the market as there is an acute shortage of the particular fertiliser.

He said that 95 percent of the paddy fertiliser on subsidy has been already released.

He made this comment after observing the Government fertiliser stores at Gallalla in

He also blamed the previous regime for their poor management of fertiliser distribution as it had attributed to certain extent for the present problem of fertiliser

Polonnaruwa in a series of his visits to look into the farmers’ grievances about the non availability of fertiliser in the market. Mr. Karunarathna said although there were 40,000 bags of Urea fertiliser in the Gallalla stores, officials of the stores had no authority to take decision as how and when to release the stock of fertiliser.

“With the beginning of the paddy harvesting of the season, the demand for Urea has come down. However there is demand for fertiliser used for other crops. Government should take a quick decision to release the stock of fertiliser now in stores to the farmers as the need for subsidy fertiliser would arise only during the next Yala season,’ it is said.

He also blamed the previous regime for their poor management of fertiliser distribution as it had attributed to certain extent for the present problem of fertiliser.

The Secretary of the Govijana Sammelanaya- T.B. Sarath also spoke.
