Gangarama Navam Perahera today and tomorrow

Navam Maha Perahera of the Hunupitya Gangarama Temple, also known as the Colombo Art Festival will parade today (7) and tomorrow.

The relics casket will be placed on the Mangala Hasthi Rajaya by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa today and it will be placed tomorrow by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

The procession will commence from the temple and parade along Udyana Weediya, Sri Jinarathan­a Road, Hunupitya Lake Road, W. A. D. Ramanayaka Mawatha, Sir James Pieris Mawatha and will return to Gangaramay­a Temple. The Mal Perahera began on January 30 and concluded yesterday.

Around 50 elephants are expected to participat­e in the Perahera, which will include many performanc­es involving Udarata, Pahatharat­a and Sabaragamu­wa dancing items.

Ven. Galaboda Sri Gnanissara Thera continued the tradition for about four decades and under his guidance the organizing of the Perahera is done by Ven. Kirinde Assaji Thera and Ven. Palatuwe Jinarathan­a Thera.
