TIRAPPANE WATER PURIFICATION PLANT: NOT FUNCTIONAL FOR LACK OF AN OIC

The water purification plant installed at the Tirappane Mahanama Maha Vidyalaya grounds by the Sri Lanka Navy under a Singaporean Ngo-funded project to provide clean drinking to the residents in the area to prevent renal ailments has not been functional for some time for want of a permanent official to maintain the plant.

The project funded by the Fly Mission of Singapore to distribute 3,000 litres of clean water a day had benefited some 2,000 people including schoolchildren. The Punewa Naval Base personnel had installed it and an officer detailed to be in charge of it.

However, the plant has not been functioning after the retirement of the officer-in-charge. Residents of the area said the officer in charge of the Sudharmaramya water purification Unit had been attending to the maintenance of the plant with water supplied only to the students of the Mahanama Maha Vidyalaya.

Residents of the area have requested the Sri Lanka Navy to restore the water supply that benefited the people in the area.
