Communal segregation is harmful for the country: Speaker

- BY SHANE SENEVIRATHNA

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya said that there was a tendency for the people to segregate on the basis of community and that it is harmful for the future of this country. It is more harmful for the future generation and those yet to be born. He said what was essential for the development of the country was national, religious and political unity.

“If this unity does not exist, then the country will suffer,”he said at a news briefing on Saturday (8).

The speaker paid homage to the Sacred Tooth Relic at Dalada Maligawa in Kandy following which he sought the blessings of the Mahanayake Theras of the Malwatte and Asgiri Chapters. He thanked them for guidance they had given him and sought their blessings because the government is scheduled to be dissolved in a few weeks.

He said, “Our country could have achieved great development but it did not become a reality even after 72 years of Independence. Politicians should understand that situation. The people should elect persons who could be considered as honourable parliamentarians. It is in the hands of the voters; the people should act intelligently. In the same way, the party leaders should make it a point to identify the correct persons for the election list. I made an attempt to create a new political culture. I am happy today because of that attempt. The media should be impartial but several media institutions seem to have gone to the other side”. He pointed out that his political journey is decided by his fate and the requirement of the country. He said that he was bound to serve the country even without position or other privileges. He asserted that would not fight or make demands for personal benefit in his bid to serve the country.
