SEBALA PUTHU

Epitome of sacrifice for mother Lanka

- TEXT BY: ZEENATH AYU

What would it be like to run into a blazing fire knowing that anytime now could be your final breath? If we were asked to voluntarily put our lives at risk for the betterment of others, how many of us would actually go ahead? When most of us do not intend even to imagine these situations, the world still has a few selfless heroes who sacrificed nearly all pleasures of life for the sake of their own nation and its people.

Sebala Puthu, a song that depicts the sacrifices that the Sri Lankan armed forces had to make for a peaceful living by all citizens of the country is a fine tribute paid to the armed forces by the famous artiste duo Bathiya and Santhush popularly known as ‘BNS’ together with Dhanith Sri.

The music video which was released on February 3 this year, exactly a year after the releasing of its audio, in view of the 72nd Independence of Sri Lanka is a masterpiece composed by the current Defence Secretary, retired Maj.gen. Kamal Gunaratne whereas the music arrangements have been done by Chamitha Cooray, all of which are a perfectly blend to arouse a sense of warmth on the motherland among all its listeners.

It is interesting to note that Bathiya and Santhush were the very artistes who sang the song ‘Sri Lanka Matha’ way back in 2009 making it a hit among Sri Lankans back then. 11 years later, with the releasing of ‘Sebala Puthu’ the duo continues to prove that they could still be as successful as they were back then in evoking a strong sense of patriotism among their countrymen with their music and creativity. This has been confirmed with the music video topping the Youtube trending list within 36 hours of being released.

The music video produced by Blusky Productions, starring Nimesh Weeranga and Nalaka Daluwatte highly contributes in melting hearts of all viewers of the video. The simple but meaningful lyrics of the song by a soldier who fought for the country and its people together with the extraordinary acting by its actors have been successful in bringing tears in the eyes of its viewers in admiration of the soldiers.

The music video passes a strong message on the sacrifices of the soldiers although it being simply 7 minutes long. It depicts how the soldiers of the armed forces left behind the good time they had to spend with their loved ones, for the sake of their country.

Being in a country that experienced the civil war for nearly thirty years, almost all Sri Lankans can relate to the feeling of living in fear of death. 11 years back, the country was in such a situation where members of the same family wouldn’t take the same bus route to reach the same destination in the hope of survival of at least one member of the family in case of a potential attack. Every time when there was an announcement of Breaking News people had used to expect a disaster. Parents were never at peace till their children reached home from school safe and sound.

It was the courage of the armed forces in spite of being at the risk of losing their own lives that brought in safety and security to the people. It was because of them and their sacrifices, the country was able to rise up stronger. For all the peace and freedom that all of us as citizens experience, the soldiers of the armed forces deserve a tremendous amount of respect. The song ‘Sebala Puthu’ by stressing all these sacrifices thus proves to be a perfect tribute to them.
