PARENTS SHOULD SET EXAMPLE; NOT PUNISH CHILDREN: JAYANTHA DE SILVA

-

Parents should set an example to their children and refrain from any misdemeanour that would influence them, Western Provincial Councillor Jayantha De Silva said addressing a ceremony of the Gauthama Pre-school at Dabare Mawatha, Colombo 5 recently.

“It’s useless to cane a child who had followed the bad examples of its parents,” he said.

He said it was illegal to beat children and that the parents should act with patience.

“It is also wrong to turn everything into political issues. I have been helping the Gauthama Pre-school from its very inception. The people know quite well that I am dedicated to service and that I take pleasure in it. The Gauthama Pre-school has produced several clever children. The parents had reported that they had come first in oratory competitions. I find that the teachers are rendering a dedicated service,” he said.

“Administration of the school is very efficient. I am proud of the Gauthama Pre- School situated in my area. The parents take a keen interest in the activities of the pre-school, and I am pleased with it. These children are the future leaders of the country.

“Beating and nagging children are illegal and any parent who does so should be subject to deterrent punishment,” he said.

“The children of today are those who would rule the country. The leaders must protect them and any leaders who fails in this duty would serve no purpose,” he said

He said that the present generation should lay the foundation for children to become leaders of the country.
