Valentine’s Day Is For All

- TEXT SIROHMI GUNESEKERA

“Be my Valentine” announced the radio presenter and Carla felt cheated because she did not have a sweetheart. How many Carlas are there feeling left out either because they did not have lovers or because they did not feel extra loving on that day? Saint Valentine was martyred because he secretly performed marriage ceremonies against the wishes of the then king who decreed that soldiers should not get married but should go to war. Let us now broaden our understanding of love to include all love relationships with parents, children, siblings and friends. So then let the fourteenth of February be a true celebration of love reaching out to any and everyone you care about. Perhaps you could make a card for your mother and gift it with a kiss and a hug. If you can afford it, buy a chocolate for your Dad and tell him “Be My Valentine”! Maybe you love your cousin and want to show him that you truly care. Give him a red ribbon and some roses, showing him that you are ready to go out of your way to be a Happy Valentine. Do you care about your Grandpa? In the words of the song “Grandpa’s Little Girl”, you could dance with him and hold him close and make his day special. Hotels, restaurants and radio stations herald Valentine’s Day offering discounts and special fare. Why don’t you splurge and take your son out for a meal? Or if you are one of those mums who spoil their sons, invite a friend instead. I am sure you have a poor friend who would welcome a treat. If you are married, why don’t you go out with your husband and make use of the special facilities offered ? Have a candlelit dinner under the stars and enjoy Roast Pork and Pineapple followed by Chocolate Mousse for dessert. You could go dancing and then go to Galle Face Green. Or you could watch the sunset and then hold hands and walk by the sea. Remember to seek out someone you care about so you can enjoy Valentine’s Day!
