NBRO issues landslide warning for Matale, Galle districts

The low pressure area that persists over South East Bay of Bengal and the adjoining South Andaman Sea area is likely to intensify further, bringing heavy thunder showers and high winds, Department of Meteorolog­y said yesterday.

“The low pressure area that persists over the South East Bay of Bengal and adjoining south Andaman sea area is likely move north, westwards. Due to the influence of the system, the showery condition over the island particular­ly in the south-western part is likely to enhance during the next few days from today.

Wind speed might increase up to 40-50 Kmph at times over the island,” the Department said.

“Showers or thundersho­wers will occur in Southern, Western, Sabaragamu­wa, Central Provinces and elsewhere, particular­ly in Uva and Eastern provinces in the evening or night,” the department added.

Meanwhile the National Building Research Organisati­on (NBRO) yesterday issued early landslide warnings for Matale and Galle Districts. Accordingl­y, people in Baddegama, Galle, Akmeemana, Elpitiya, Niyagama, Bope, Poddala and Ukuwela were asked to be watchful of sudden appearance of water sprouts, cracks on walls and on the soil as these may be signs of impending landslides.

Meanwhile, the Irrigation Department warned that certain rivers in the country could be expected to reach spill level.

Accordingl­y, Mee Oya, Deduru Oya, attanagalu Oya, Kelani River, Kalu Ganga, Benthara River, Gin Ganga, Nilwala River, Kirama River and Uuru-boku Oya could reach spill level.
