Gurusinha shows interest in coaching Indian Ranji Trophy team
Gurusinha’s name has not been recommended by Whatmore but he himself has shown interest
Sri Lanka’s 1996 World Cup winning team member Asanka Gurusinha has shown interest to coach one of India’s Ranji Trophy teams, it is learnt.
According to the sources, he is believed to have sent his CV to the Kerala Cricket Association (KCA).
It may be noted here that another Sri Lanka-born Australian coach Dav Whatmore’s three-year contract with Kerala team ended last season.
The 53-year-old Gurusinha has worked with the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) in various positions as team manager, selector and High Performance Manager before returning to his adopted country Australia last year.
“Gurusinha’s name has not been recommended by Whatmore but he himself has shown interest,” Sreejith
Nair, the Secretary of the Association confirmed.
Gurusinha is a
Level 3 certified Cricket Coach, and was also the
Consultant Regional Cricket Coach for Cricket Australia (CA) in the past.
“We have an online AGM on June 1 where the credentials of other candidates will be discussed,” S. Ramesh, another key member of the association, said.
“So many cricketers and coaches have shown interest and will hire the coach (either foreigner or Indian) as per our budget,” he added.
South Africa’s Heinrich Malan is another one of the foreign candidates who have also shown interest, it is learnt. The 40-year-old South African has played 10 First Class matches. Initially, the coach may be given a shortterm contract. Kerala’s seam bowler G. Jayakumar has also applied for the post.
