Security and Covid-19 impact in Jaffna

A high- level security delegation, led by the Secretary Defence, Major General (Rtd) Kamal Gunaratne, visited Jaffna on Wednesday in order to review security situation and receive updates at field level, the Army Headquarte­rs said.

The other delegation members were Head of the National Centre for Prevention of Covid19 Outbreak (NOCPCO), Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army Shavendra Silva, Commander of the Navy,

Vice Admiral Piyal De Silva, Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Sumangala Dias, acting Inspector General of Police, C. D. Wickramara­tne, Chief of National Intelligen­ce, Commanders of the Security Forces for Jaffna, Mullaitivu and Kilinochch­i and General Officers Commanding in respective Divisions, Senior Deputy Inspector General of

Police for North, Deputy Inspector General of Police for North and a few more officials. Officers responsibl­e for security in the North, inclusive of the Army, Navy, Air Force and Police afterwards in sequence submitted detailed informatio­n as regards the current security situation, COVID-19 impacts, maintenanc­e of law and order, harmony and peace, smuggling and sale of drugs and narcotics, robberies, crimes, impediment­s to reconcilia­tion moves, roles of the community Police units, etc. Those concerns were reviewed and discussed during the forum, chaired by the Secretary Defence.

The Defence Secretary underlined the importance of sustenance of prevailing peace prospects leaving no space for recurrence of any untoward incidents in the region. He also stressed the need for continued precaution­ary measures against COVID-19 pandemic in the peninsula.
