SEAWATER FLOWS ONTO GALLE ROAD IN KAHAWA AREA

- BY HEMANTHA DE SILVA

With sea erosion intensifying, the sea had inundated into Galle Road in areas in the Kahawa Junction area restricting the movement of light vehicles travelling towards Galle, Meetiyagoda Police said. With the onset of the monsoon season and the seas becoming rough, the seawater had overflowed onto Galle Road and the area from the Akurala Sudeerarama Temple, towards Kahawa, Godagama, Telwatte and Peraliya stretch of Galle Road had been covered by sea sand yesterday, making the road impassable.

Due to seawater washing onto the Galle road consistently, the Meetiyagoda Police had taken steps on Saturday to close the Galle Road from 06.00 p.m. up to Telwatte Junction.

Dashing waves had also caused damages to vehicles that were travelling towards Galle. Accordingly, the Police had requested motorists to use alternate roads from the Kahawa Junction.

“The big boulders that had been placed along the coast to control sea erosion were no match for the rough seas which dashed onto the roads over this barrage of boulders, bringing with it sea sand which filled the Galle Road preventing the movement of vehicles and also pedestrians,” an officer said.

The Kahawa Vocational Training Centre too had been affected by the flow of seawater, inundating it completely.

Police teams from Ambalangoda and Meetiyagoda were seen engaged in the clearing of the sand from the road using backhoe machines while controlling the movement of traffic.
