Govt. to build 10 new High Tech Universities : Bandula
The government will build 10 new High Tech Universities with the financial backing of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), increasing the total number of national universities to 25 from 15, Higher Education, Technology and Innovation Minister Bandula Gunawardhana said.
New Universities will be established in 10 districts where facilities for University education is currently unavailable he added.
The sole purpose of establishing high tech Universities is to pave the way for the youth of the nation to proceed on the ‘Information Superhighway’ as the future of a country or a nation lies in the progress made in technology. What ever traditional subjects our youth choose for their degree programmes or vocational training, they must be studied in combination with high technology. The new high tech Universities are aimed at targeting this requirement,” Minister Gunawardhana stressed.
The new high tech Universities will give priority to study Information Technology, Engineering Technology and Bio Technology. The UGC will conduct a feasibility study shortly to identify locations and other logistical aspects of the new Universities which are expected to be constructed at Nuwara – Eliya, Matale, Puttalam, Mannar, Mullaitivu, Galle and Polonnaruwa, Minister Gunawardhana noted.
Cabinet approval has already been granted for the proposal, Minister Gunawardhana said and added only 15 Universities have been established since 1948 but this government would build 10 more Universities within the next five years.
