Haroon Aslam teenage golf sensation from Kandy
It was by accident that Haroon Aslam took to golf and he was just nine years old when he participated in his maiden golf tournament at the Victoria Golf and Country Resort (VGCR) Course in Kandy seven years ago.
There was no turning back for this youngster from there onwards and at 16 years, he has already created history by winning many events at a very young age.
Haroon followed his basics at the VGCR and later became a member at the Nuwara Eliya Golf Course (NEGC) as well. The youngster had his primary education at Ecole Internationale, Digana and later he moved to Trinity College to continue his higher studies.
“I am working very hard to improve my golf even though the facilities available are limited to me. It takes about an hour to reach the golf club from home where I live in Akurana and that limits my chances to spend time in the golf course during schooldays. On average, I only get to play in the course about eight times a month,” Haroon told the Daily Mirror.
“I have seen the steady rise of Haroon over the years as a determined junior golfer and it’s great to see him at Trinity and undoubtedly he will spark interest in golf,” junior golf promoter Tharanga Gunasekera revealed.
“He is great talent to watch in the future and he will undoubtedly benefit from the passion for sports in the school,” Gunasekera added.
“We as parents have been there for Haroon whenever he needed us. We had to sacrifice a lot of our time for Haroon’s golf. The golf course is about one hour drive from home and it is always difficult but we manage to take him there for his training,” Haroon’s father Aslam told the Daily Mirror.
“Haroon has managed his studies and golf very well. I like to take this opportunity to thank all the coaching staff and the teachers both at Ecole and Trinity for their support,” Aslam added further.
