Dian gets elected to World Boxing Body
Dian Gomes, the incumbent President of the Amateur Boxing Association of Sri
Lanka (ABA), has been appointed as an Executive Committee member of the world boxing body,aiba.
Gomes is no stranger to the boxing arena in Sri Lanka as his name is synonymous with the renaissance of the sport in Sri Lanka, and was recently elected as the head of the ABA for the third time.
A former Royal College fly-weight boxing champion and a former president of CIMA Sri Lanka Division, Gomes has been a leading corporate personality for the better part of three decades.
He was the Group Director of MAS Holdings and then Chairman of Hela
Clothing, where he was instrumental in promoting not only boxing but other sports and supporting rural athletes. He currently serves as the Honorary Consul of Georgia in Sri Lanka and is on the Board of Nestle Lanka PLC.
Gomes’ service in taking the nation’s boxing to the international arena exceeded all expectations since his first stint as the chief of the ABA way back in 2004.
His dedication saw Sri Lanka producing a boxer in Anuruddha Ratnayake to compete at the 2008 Beijing Olympics which was after a lapse of 40 years, followed by three boxers winning medals at the Commonwealth Games in Brisbane after a lapse of 68 years. MSA
