BANGLADESH TOUR OF SRI LANKA POSTPONED TO NEXT YEAR

- BY SHEHAN DANIEL AND BIPIN DANI

Bangladesh’s tour to Sri Lanka, scheduled to begin later this month, has been postponed to next year. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) had been unable to reach a compromise on the period that the visiting Bangladesh Team would need to be in isolation, with Health Ministry officials insisting that a 14-day quarantine was mandatory.

This would mean that Sri Lanka will not host any international cricket for the rest of the year, having already postponed series against England, South Africa and India.

Bangladesh were scheduled to play three Test matches in a series beginning this month and ending in November.

“We will try and schedule this after the England tour next year (in January),” SLC Secretary Mohan de Silva said yesterday.

The Lanka Premier League (LPL) is still expected to go ahead, with franchises having already been informed that overseas players would need to undergo 14 days of quarantine on arrival if they are to participate in the tournament.

The message to the Sri Lankan players was conveyed on their Whatsapp group.

Meanwhile, confirming the news from Dhaka, a Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) official said: “The tour has been postponed and the new dates will be finalised at a later date.”

“The training of the players will continue,” he further added.

BCB were hoping to send the team to Sri Lanka between October 8 and 10 but the plans have been put on hold till the new dates are announced.
