Bangalore beat Mumbai in a Super Over thriller

-

Royal Challengers Bangalore beat Mumbai Indians after a Super Over in their Indian Premier League match at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium yesterday.

Mumbai could manage only seven runs in the Super Over, after having sensationally tied Bangalore’s score, but Virat Kohli smashed a four off the last of the six ball super over, bowled by Jasprit Bumrah, to seal the game for Bangalore.

Mumbai, who were chasing 202 to win, looked destined for defeat when they needed 80 off the last four overs, but Keiron Pollard’s sensational six-hitting brought them to within a run of victory.

Needing five to win off the last ball of the 20 overs, Pollard struck a boundary which meant both teams tied on 201 at their end of their alloted overs.

Pollard was unbeaten on 60 off 24, while Ishan Kishan fell just short of a century, scoring 99 off 58 balls.

AB de Villiers, who partnered Kohli in the Super Over, scored an unbeaten 55 to help Bangalore score 201 in their 20 overs, looking in good touch despite his retirement from international cricket.

Young opener Devdutt Padikkal struck his second fifty in his IPL career that has started in sensational fashion. If he was the aggressor in his first half-century, the 20-year-old showed maturity scoring 54 off 40 balls as Aaron Finch who scored 52, laid into the bowling.

Shivam Dube hit sixes off James Pattinson’s final over, the last one taking the score past 200. However, 22-year-old Ishan Kishen’s anchoring knock and Pollard’s typical power-hitting set up a thrilling finale.
