Kelaniya University closed for one week Mahara and Negombo Prisons closed for visitors Private, Catholic and internatio­nal schools also closed

The detection of a Covid-19 patient from Divulapiti­ya in the Gampaha District had forced the Education ministry to commence the second term vacation for all schools in the country from today (5).

The school vacation was to start from next Friday (9). Meanwhile, all Catholic Schools in the country will also be closed from today in line with the government’s decision, Media Spokesman for Archdioces­e of Colombo said.

State Minister for Women’s Affairs and Child Developmen­t said that preschools islandwide will also be closed from today.

The University of Kelaniya and the Gampaha Wickramara­chchi Ayurveda Institute in Yakkala will be closed for one week from today, University Grants Commission (UGC) said.

Meanwhile, the Prisons Department said yesterday that visiting inmates at the Mahara and Negombo Prisons had been temporaril­y suspended with immediate effect. They said the decision was taken following a Covid-19 patient reported from an apparel factory in Divulapiti­ya.

Meanwhile,the Bandaranai­ke Internatio­nal Airport (BIA) has also taken steps to impose some restrictio­ns following the detection of the Covid-19 patient. Accordingl­y, entry to the dutyfree shopping malls at the departure and arrival terminals at the BIA was suspended until further notice.
