Avishka steers Melbn Western Warriors to second win

Avishka Fernando continued his fine batting form when he slammed 86 to steer Melbn Western Warriors to a comfortabl­e 73-run win over Prima Stella Eastern Warriors in the Army Commanders T20 cricket tournament encounter played at the Army ground in Dombagoda yesterday.

Fernando’s quick-fire knock came in just 42 balls including three boundaries and nine towering sixes, and he was involved in a valuable 50-ball 105-run stand for the second wicket with Lakshan Edirisingh­e who chipped in with a 42. It ensured Melbn Western Warriors made a formidable score of 211.

Prima Stella Eastern Warriors in their run chase were crippled by the Western Warriors bowling trio of skipper Thisara Perera, Mahesh Theekshana and Gayan Bandara who together shared eight wickets bowling out the opposition for 138 runs.

Meanwhile, Dimo Southern Warriors recorded their first win of the tournament thanks to skipper Dinesh Chandimal and Priyantha Ratnayake who together associated in a opening stand of 77 runs to cruise through to a five-wicket win over Super Fashion Northern Warriors in another match of the same tournament played in the afternoon session.

Super Fashion Northern Warriors taking first lease of the wicket were restricted to a score of 125 runs and

Dimo Southern Warriors in their run chase guided by Chandimal and Ratnayake reached the target with six balls to spare.

Two matches are down for decision today with Prima Stella Eastern Warriors meeting Dimo Southern Warriors and Super Fashion Northern Warriors clashing with Melbn Western Warriors.
