UDA to construct eight vehicle parks in Colombo

Urban Developmen­t Authority has taken steps to construct eight vehicle parks in the Colombo city to reduce the traffic congestion in the city to the barest minimum. The programme commenced with the constructi­on works of the ten storied Telecom vehicle park behind the Lake House. The project costing Rs.1,113 will be funded by the UDA and it is the firstever multi-storied vehicle park built by a government institutio­n.

Addressing the inaugural ceremony Secretary to the Ministry of Urban Developmen­t Sirinimal Perera said the constructi­on works of the main project would be completed in four years.

He said the project had been planned in 2013 but stalled for a long time.

“It will be implemente­d as an accelerate­d project to avoid the traffic congestion experience­d in the city. The UDA has planned to construct four similar vehicle parks in the suburbs. The ten-storied vehicle park will comprise a shopping complex in the ground floor and seven residentia­l houses on the tenth floor,” he further said. The project would be implemente­d under the State Minister of Urban Developmen­t Dr. Nalaka Godahewa, Secretary to the Ministry of Urban Developmen­t and Housing Sirinimal Perera, Chairman of the Urban Developmen­t Authority Harshan De Silva and Director General Prasad Ranaweera.
