All temples should follow health guidelines
The Department of Buddhist Affairs has instructed that all Vas ceremonies in temples should be subject to the health guidelines in view of the threat of COVID-19 pandemic.
Commissioner General of Buddhist Affairs Sunanda Kariyapperuma said the Katina ceremonies in the Vas season which had been an integral part of the Sri Lankan culture for centuries would not be prevented but the devotees participating should strictly adhere to health guidelines.
He pointed out that the number of participants should be reduced to the barest minimum and that the Chief Incumbents and the organisers of Vas ceremonies should take the responsibility. However, this decision would be subject to any further recommendations of the health authorities. He pointed out that the Health Ministry has instructed not to hold processions and that it could affect the Katina Peraheras as well.
