All tem­ples should fol­low health guide­lines

The De­part­ment of Bud­dhist Af­fairs has in­structed that all Vas cer­e­monies in tem­ples should be sub­ject to the health guide­lines in view of the threat of COVID-19 pan­demic.

Com­mis­sioner Gen­eral of Bud­dhist Af­fairs Su­nanda Kariyap­pe­ruma said the Katina cer­e­monies in the Vas sea­son which had been an in­te­gral part of the Sri Lankan cul­ture for cen­turies would not be pre­vented but the devo­tees par­tic­i­pat­ing should strictly ad­here to health guide­lines.

He pointed out that the num­ber of par­tic­i­pants should be re­duced to the barest min­i­mum and that the Chief In­cum­bents and the or­gan­is­ers of Vas cer­e­monies should take the re­spon­si­bil­ity. How­ever, this de­ci­sion would be sub­ject to any fur­ther rec­om­men­da­tions of the health au­thor­i­ties. He pointed out that the Health Min­istry has in­structed not to hold pro­ces­sions and that it could af­fect the Katina Per­a­heras as well.
