ARMY INNOVATIONS & NEW PRODUCTIONS GO OVERSEAS
To keep abreast with fast changing modern needs for military hardware, Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (SLEME) of the Army recently succeeded in inventing nine modernized versions of air-conditioned Unibuffels that could resist any blast with the determined objective of saving a large chunk of foreign exchange to the country and strengthening the Army fleet of heavy vehicles.
During discussions, Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army encouraged the electrical, mechanical and technical experts in the Army to innovate and modify available old vehicles that could be used for good purposes with focus on UN peacekeeping operations in Mali or elsewhere to match with UN standards Similarly, a locally-produced blast resistant ambulance with essential medical equipment, such as a refrigerator, non-blast glassware protection, oxygen masks, defibrillators, pressure meters and a portable bed which could easily be fixed in any place inside the vehicle for combat requirements. The manufacturing cost of a single vehicle is about Rs 10.8 m. Similarly, on the instructions of the

Commander, all SFHQS and other formations in order to tap inborn innovative, technical and creative talents of the troops in close cooperation with state authorities are holding exhibitions, titled ‘Innovations’ where the troops are capable of showcasing their creative products.
