SL’S amnesic syndrome
Sri Lankans have a unique trait of forgetting an important event in a span of a week or so. During last year, the 21st day of every month was commemorated in memory of the Easter Sunday victims. But there were hardly any such memorials held this year. This is the same with the tsunami where the family members of the departed would light a lamp in memory of their loved ones amidst chanting of pirith on December 24. While the 20th Amendment was being discussed, a new COVID cluster emerged – fortunately or unfortunately that is – and now people seem to be forgetting both of these issues. What a country we have become! This goes on to show that the citizenry themselves have become a selfish kind. Thank God for Facebook that at least some keyboard warriors could keep at it while the world is turning upside down. Only a few would even take time to hold a placard and voice against injustices happening to the country in a socio-political level. But even that too cannot be executed due to the pandemic situation. However it’s important to draw examples from other countries where the voices of people are stronger. Once the Supreme Court determination is read next week, let’s hope that people won’t forget the newly expanding COVID cluster!
