For­mer SL ath­lete Ran­jith Weerasena passes away

For­mer Na­tional dis­cus throw cham­pion, Ran­jith L. Weerasena who rep­re­sented Sri Lanka with dis­tinc­tion as an ath­lete and later dis­tin­guished as an ad­min­is­tra­tor, passed away in Colombo yesterday.

One of the finest prod­ucts to emerge from St. Peter’s Col­lege, Bam­bal­api­tiya, Weerasena was an ath­letic gi­ant be­ing Na­tional cham­pion for 14 years un­til 1975.

He gave no­tice of his prow­ess as a school­boy in 1959, win­ning Gold at an Asian Meet. He rep­re­sented Ace Ath­letic Club which he later headed for 25 years.

He was the youngest Pres­i­dent of the Ama­teur Ath­letic As­so­ci­a­tion of Sri Lanka from 1978 to 1982 when he was 39 and headed the Na­tional Olympic Com­mit­tee from 1980 to 1982.

He was also a Coun­cil Mem­ber of the Asian Ath­letic As­so­ci­a­tion for nine years from 1999 to 2007. He was also a founder mem­ber of the Sri Lanka Vet­er­ans’ Ath­letic As­so­ci­a­tion. The late Weerasena was awarded the Life Time Hon­orary Ti­tle -‘Kreeda Bhushana’ - at the Pres­i­den­tial Sports Awards in 2017.

The fu­neral ar­range­ments of late Ran­jith Weerasena will be no­ti­fied later.
