Former SL athlete Ranjith Weerasena passes away
Former National discus throw champion, Ranjith L. Weerasena who represented Sri Lanka with distinction as an athlete and later distinguished as an administrator, passed away in Colombo yesterday.
One of the finest products to emerge from St. Peter’s College, Bambalapitiya, Weerasena was an athletic giant being National champion for 14 years until 1975.
He gave notice of his prowess as a schoolboy in 1959, winning Gold at an Asian Meet. He represented Ace Athletic Club which he later headed for 25 years.
He was the youngest President of the Amateur Athletic Association of Sri Lanka from 1978 to 1982 when he was 39 and headed the National Olympic Committee from 1980 to 1982.
He was also a Council Member of the Asian Athletic Association for nine years from 1999 to 2007. He was also a founder member of the Sri Lanka Veterans’ Athletic Association. The late Weerasena was awarded the Life Time Honorary Title -‘Kreeda Bhushana’ - at the Presidential Sports Awards in 2017.
