The AGM of the Sri Lanka UK Society
The AGM of the Sri Lanka UK Society was held recently at Movenpick Hotel. The Chief Guest was Her Excellency The British High Commissioner Sarah Hulton. The new President elected was Danesh Abeyawickrama, who made an excellent speech, speaking English as it should be spoken which is rare today. His wife Ayanthi was the epitome of elegance in a beautiful saree, which was much admired. It was good to hear from her that, although now a lawyer, she had started as a journalist at the Sun, where I began my journalism too. It warmed my heart when she told me that she had been sent to interview my late father by the late Rex de Silva, then editor of the Sun. The High Commissioner traced the ties between our two countries ; of special interest at this time was that The University of Oxford and the University of Jayawewardenepura were working together on research to find a cure for Coviid virus. The Vice Presidents elected were Sega Nagendra and Mark Brennan and it was a pleasant evening. It promises to be a good committee with former Presidents Raj Rajendra and Rohan Victoria lending their weight on it. Both their wives Sharon and Suhashini were present, also Professor Neluka de Silva in a lovely saree. There was fellowship time later on and the High Commissioner mingled happily with all present.
