A memorial service

Rosy Senanayake, Mayor of Colombo held a memorial service to celebrate the life of her late husband, Athula at her residence. Athula had a witty sense of humour which most speakers commented on. I was most impressed with the tributes paid by their daughter Thisakya and Athula’s lifetime friend, Sanath Ukwatte, who related many amusing anecdotes from their lifelong friendship. Others who spoke were Athula’s elder brother Sanjiva and Dilhan Fernando. Their son Kanishka spoke last about Athula and Rosy and thanked all present. Among old friends were Abbas and Alnaz Esufally, Ramani Fernando and Ranil de Silva. Also present were the British High Commissioner, the French, German and Norwegian Ambassadors , Sandra Perera and Nedra Hewavitarane. It was a heartwarming tribute to Athula, I have known them both for over 25 years.
