Young men and women audition for coveted spots at the New York High School of Performing Arts. Those who make it discover that it takes a lot of hard work to make it big. The kids grapple with heavy issues such as homosexual­ity, abortion, attempted suicide and illiteracy while dealing with the usual pressures of adolescenc­e.

LAST AMERICAN VIRGIN

Pizza delivery boy Gary and his two friends David and hunky Rick are high schoolers out to lose their virginity any way they can. Gary falls for transfer student Karen who starts dating Rick. When Karen gets pregnant, Gary helps her through an abortion, and thinks that his concern has won her over, only to find she still pines for Rick.

KARATE KID

Daniel and his mother move to California where she has a new job, but Daniel quickly discovers that fitting in is harder than he thought. Daniel manages to talk his way out of some fights, but he is cornered by several who belong to the same karate school. As Daniel is passing out from the beating he sees Miyagi. The elderly gardener leaps into the fray and saves him. Miyagi teaches Daniel karate and arranges a fight at the all-valley tournament.

Her special birthday. Overshadow­ed by her sister’s wedding, Samantha (Molly Ringwald) faces her 16th birthday with dread. Samantha has a crush on older boy Jake (Michael Schoefflin­g), but worries that her chastity will be a turnoff for the popular senior.

Terry Griffith loses her high school’s writing competitio­n, she’s convinced that it’s because she’s a girl. So Terry changes high schools and poses as a boy to prove her point. She soon makes friends with the boys at school, including the attractive Rick who becomes her new best friend. But her gender-swapping makes things difficult when she falls for him.
