Advocata Institute to host event on SL’S gender discrimina­tory labour laws

Colombo-based think tank Advocata Institute is hosting an event on the topic of gender discrimina­tory labour laws in Sri Lanka and the surroundin­g policy issues, on March 5, 2021, at (Longdon) Taj Samudra Hotel, Colombo.

The event will feature a discussion by a panel of experts on various issues surroundin­g gender discrimina­tory labour laws in Sri Lanka.

The panellists will be Justice Minister M.U.M. Ali Sabry MP, Madhavie Gunawarden­a (former Commission­er of Labour, Women and Children Affairs, Department of Labour), Verite Research Deputy Head of Legal Research Malsirini De Silva and Fonterra Human Resources, Business Partner Kanishka Paternott.

The discussion will be moderated by Sathya Karunarath­ne, a researcher from the Advocata Institute.

The Advocata Institute is hosting this panel discussion in celebratio­n of the Internatio­nal Women’s Day. By organising this event, it looks forward to creating awareness of the working conditions of women in Sri Lanka. This discussion will explore the barriers posed by the labour laws that restrict women’s ability to enter and remain in the workforce.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event is on invitation only. In-person seating is limited with strict COVID-19 guidelines. The online panel discussion will be hosted on Zoom (English translatio­ns will be available) and also livestream­ed on Advocata Institute’s Facebook Page
