Country full of reality shows

-

Our beautiful country is plagued with deteriorating moral standards and being cast into a state of shame and disdain. From the recent humongous Sugar price manipulation scam to defraud the tax authorities of colossal revenue, to the importation of carcinogenic coconut oil mysteriously with the Customs purportedly keeping a tab on it to ensure the proper distribution, subject to health authorities giving it approval. The latest is the stripping of the title of a beauty pageant winner, by taking away the crown in the most disdainful and scandalous manner on the grounds that she had flouted the eligibility criteria. It was just a few days ago we witnessed in broad daylight the antics of terror inflicted by an unscrupulous police officer who performed a wrestling leap to subdue and manhandle a vehicle driver for having knocked down a fellow police officer who was on the road.

It looks so sad as the perception maybe that we are living in a fool’s paradise because the recent events that transpired are all laced with histrionics and perhaps keep the masses engrossed and enthused

Then in the political scenario, we have the most celebrated dramatis personae, our parliamentarians whom we see in the proceedings of the august house behaving like street urchins. They trade insults and violate the sanctity of the house, with no sense of dignity nor decorum. When burning issues of the current state of our economy, the concern for effective containment of the spreading of the number of coronavirus cases, justice for the Easter Sunday massacre victims, and the blatant denudation of our forests are being treated with scant respect; where does the fate of our beloved country lie?

It looks so sad as the perception maybe that we are living in a fool’s paradise because the recent events that transpired are all laced with histrionics and perhaps keep the masses engrossed and enthused. Is this the deplorable state of affairs that we have got accustomed to because you could see episode after episode is produced gratuitously, and we seem to be quite desensitised and consequently receptive to these reality shows? What a funny country we have turned out to be – a laughingstock par excellence.
