Wither Justice? Wither Truth? Wither our Politicians’ love of Mother Lanka?

- A DESPERATE CITIZEN

I don’t think I need to list my woes herein because, by now, all know exactly what’s happening in our Motherland.

We recall the hope and expectancy we had when we voted for a two-third majority: believing in a trustworthy, fair and just leadership that will revolutionise the spirit of our country, but the leaders have chosen the path of hypocrisy, covering up their ulterior motives with one ambition - to benefit themselves and their kith and kin. they are faking religiosity without shame and making our beautiful, rich and resplendent Island nation a notorious land of thieves and poverty-stricken debtors to other nations.

How stupid we Sinhalese are? Wither our intellectuals? ...gone to other countries. Wither our economists? Wither our genuine sacrificial workers?... threatened and silenced!

Opportunity knocks once, perhaps twice for our Leaders to arise as Statesman - to be acclaimed as World Leaders of worth. But the fools that they are have not grabbed the opportunity! Nationally and Internationally we are now ‘pariahs’. We are selfish, arrogant fools who do not know the basic tenets of human rights, nor do we have a humanitarian conscience. Before we descend to the lowest realm of spiritual degradation and even gracious thinking, our so-called leaders must meditate on what the respected hierarchy of the Buddhist Temples are now expressing - their severe disdain, and listen to our honourable Cardinal who speaks from the depths of his heart, also heed the heart-warming declarations of Bhagya - a mere child with more love for her Motherland than any of our pathetic political leaders. In fact, it was an outrageous exhibition of political mediocrity and shallowness when the severity of the human-elephant conflict was treated as a joke for his temporary enjoyment, while the poverty-stricken villagers are crying out for a solution. these are but a fraction of the disastrous failures. But, I must mention the major issue of the callous nature of the cases against Ranjan Ramanayake, Shani Abeyesekara etc. etc. utterly Inhuman!

If we had just ONE Leader amongst this lot, with decency and good character - one Statesman, how easy it would be to uplift the condition and status of our little Island and make it worthy of being called ‘Paradise”., where no child will need to go abroad for education, and no man or woman will need to go abroad for employment and no rich or needy patient will think of going to Singapore for medical treatment.

It is surely unnecessary to have 225 parliamentarians plus provincial councillors, grama niladharis etc. etc. to run our little Island ....

Isn’t it unconscionable not to grant a monthly welfare handout of at least Rs.10,000/- per unemployed family? Even Bangladesh gives such welfare!

Loans were granted in billions to cigarette importers and others - which must surely be stopped. Give us a safe and secure Motherland, where we can trust our leaders and feel safe and secure - not deprived, poor and forsaken - and thereby resort to rob to feed our children,,, even pick people’s pockets or hide our sorrows in alcohol and drugs.
