CHAHAR, MOEEN SHINE FOR CHENNAI AGAINST PUNJAB

Aterrific 66-run partnershi­p between Faf du Plessis and Moeen Ali followed by a bowling carnage from Deepak Chahar with the new ball saw Chennai Super Kings register a comfortabl­e six-wicket win over Punjab Kings in Match 8 of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 season, at the Wankhede Stadium yesterday.

Chasing a target of 107 runs, Chennai reached the target in 15.5 overs losing just four wickets. Opener du Plessis scored an unbeaten knock of to help his side win the fixture, slamming 36 runs off 33 balls. English all-rounder Ali also made a match-winning contributi­on, scoring 46 runs in 31 balls, packed with seven fours and a six. Sam Curran hit the winning boundary for Chennai, to seal their first win of the campaign.

Mohammed Shami was the top bowler for Punjab, taking two wickets in four overs. Meanwhile, Arshdeep Singh and Murugan Ashwin registered a dismissal each.

Earlier, Punjab were humbled by the Chennai bowling as they were restricted to 106/8 in their allotted 20 overs. The Punjab franchise had a poor start, losing early wickets. Opener KL Rahul could only muster five runs, and his opening partner Mayank Agarwal was dismissed for a two-ball duck. Shahrukh Khan made the only noteworthy contributi­on for Punjab, scoring 47 off 36 balls, before getting dismissed in the final over. Chahar was in superb form for Chennai, taking four wickets for just 13 runs. Curran, Moeen and Dwayne Bravo registered a dismissal each.
