Sri Lanka has no need for a Hitler!

- RUSSELL CC NUGEGODA

State Minister of Vehicle Regulation, Bus Transport Services, Train Compartments and Motor Car Industry Dilum Amunugama, some two weeks ago came up with the appalling suggestion that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa should, at least to some extent, re-design himself as an Adolf Hitler. This suggestion was roundly condemned by none other than the German Ambassador Holger Seubert who ticked off Mr. Amunugama for having wished for a ‘Hitler’.

Let me remind those voices that Adolf Hitler was responsible for human suffering and despair beyond imagination, with millions of deaths

“I‘m hearing claims that “a Hitler” could be beneficial to Sri Lanka today,” Mr. Seubert said in a twitter message.“let me remind those voices that Adolf Hitler was responsible for human suffering and despair beyond imagination, with millions of deaths. He is definitely no role model for any politician!”

Had Mr. Amunugama read some of the history books on Hitler, he would have never made such a stupid suggestion. Probably, he might have said it out of a sense of frustration that nothing much seems to be going right for the Gotabaya government.

He may also have been unable to stomach the fact that the people are no longer willing to swallow the fibs being dished out by the government but are alert to the goings on in the echelons of power. Mr. Amunugama should have by now realised that governing a country with people, who are capable of thinking for themselves, is quite different to giving orders to robots.

As it is well known, Hitler is the personification of evil. He consigned millions of innocent Jews, including men women and children to the gas chambers and ordered his sycophants to carry out a series of dreadful, inhumane and unethical medical experiments on Jews and gypsies so as to check out the various unimaginable theories held by the Nazis. It was Hitler’s murderous mayhem unleashed on innocent Jews which gave birth to what has now come to be known as the ‘Holocaust’.

I hope not, but who knows, if by some misfortune, a Hitler happens to be reborn in Sri Lanka as wished for by Mr. Amunugama, he could even request to be appointed as the minister or state minister of

gas chambers.
