Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa yesterday urged the government to hold the provincial council election and the local government election scheduled for next year without postponement.

Speaking at a ceremony held to mark the handover of medical equipment to the Pottuvil Hospital, Mr. Premadasa said these elections should be held in order to feel the pulse of the people.

“Everyone including the government will be able to know where the people of this country stand if the provincial council elections and local government elections due early next year are held without postponement,”mr. Premadasa said.

He also urged the government to divert the funds allocated for the construction of jogging tracks by bringing in a resolution in Parliament. “Some in the government say it is not possible to divert the funds set aside for the construction of jogging tracks as funds have already been allocated for the project through the budget. However, one must remember that it is possible to divert the funds by bringing in a resolution to that effect. These funds should be utilized to purchase much needed medical equipment for hospitals,” he added.
