WORLD ANIMAL DAY

- By Lishanthi Wijewardene

World Animal Day is celebrated annually, all over the world on the 4th of October; and it reminds us of our responsibility towards the welfare and well-being of animals, and to make the world a better place for all animals. We must remember that it is not about celebrating animal care and protection for just one day. Instead it is about making a decision to care for animals every day and stop cruelty to animals. The theme for World Animal Day 2021 is “Forests and Livelihoods: Sustaining People and Planet.”

I am sure most of you have pets and you look after them with a lot of love. However not all pets are treated with love. I am sure you would have heard of cruelty to pets, animals living on the streets and animals living in the wild. Many events are arranged all over the world to celebrate World Animal Day, such as awareness programmes, educational events, and pet adoption events. Activists from around the world conduct programmes to draw attention to some of the most urgent challenges facing animals.

They also stress on the importance of treating animals more compassionately and humanely and creating a safe environment for them to live in.

`World Animal Day was founded by writer and animal activist Heinrich Zimmermann, the author of Mensch und Hund (Man and Dog) and was first held in Berlin, Germany on March 24, 1925. Originally Mr. Zimmermann’s initiative was observed in Germany, austria, switzerland and Czechoslovakia. However, he worked untiringly to promote World Animal Day.

The International Animal Protection Congress in Florence, Italy, accepted Zimmerman’s proposal and adopted it as a resolution to celebrate World Animal Day on the 4th of October, universally. therefore, it was celebrated for the first time on the 4th of October, 1929, together with the Feast Day of Saint Francis of Assisi.

October 4th is also the Feast Day of Francis of Assisi, who is known for his kindness to animals, and who is the patron saint of ecology and animals. According to legend, he was able to talk to animals, which is why he is depicted in numerous works of art surrounded by animals.

Here are some ideas on how to celebrate this day. Remember to continue these activities whenever you can.

• There are many animal welfare organizations.you could donate something for the welfare of the animals.

• There are many community groups, youth groups and clubs that are working with animal welfare organizations.you might be able to join as a volunteer.

• Take care of your pets. Take them to the vet for regular check-ups. Spend time with them and treat them with love. If you do not have a pet, but are thinking of getting one, why not adopt a homeless animal?

• Educate your friends and family about being kind to animals.

• Do not buy products that are made by killing animals.

• Feed stray animals near your home.

These are only a few ways in which you can help. However, the simplest way is to take a pledge to care for and protect animals. This can help others to understand their responsibilities. Together, we can make this world a better place for animals.
