- BY SUSIL PREMALAL REPORTING FROM THE MALDIVES

Sri Lanka's chances of making it to the semi-finals of the SAFF Football Championship took a massive blow when they went down fighting 2-3 at the hands of Nepal in the fourth match of the tournament at the National Stadium in the Maldives yesterday.

Nepal took an early lead when Suman Lama scored the opening goal in the 33rd minute to give his side a close 1-0 lead going into half time.

Sri Lanka's only chance of scoring during the first half came when they were awarded a free-kick in the seventh minute but they fluffed the golden opportunity.

Nepal further increased their lead when midfielder Anjan Bista found the net in the 51st minute to make it 2-0.

However, six minutes later Sri Lanka scored their first goal when midfielder Marvin Hamilton netted following a neat pass from Dillon de Silva.

But Nepal put the issue beyond doubt when Ayush Ghalan scored the third goal in the 86th minute and went on to register their second win of the tournament.

Sri Lanka scored a consolation goal during injury time through Dillon de Silva as they eventually went down fighting 2-3.

Earlier, Sri Lanka made three changes to the side as they brought in Mohamed Aakib, Mohamed Shifan and Dillon de Silva in place of Dukson Puslas, Asikur Rahuman and Jude Supan.
