Maldives record first win in SAFF Football Tourney

The Maldives recorded their first win of the tournament when they defeated Bangladesh 2-0 in the SAFF Football Championsh­ip match played at the National Stadium in the Maldives yesterday.

After a scoreless first half, the Maldives came into recognitio­n with two superb goals and to completely outplay their opponents in the second half.

First it was Hamza Mohamed who opened the scoring for the home side in the 55th minute following a good pass from H. Nihan.

The Maldives went further ahead when they were awarded a penalty in the 74th minute with striker Ali Ashak doing the needful to virtually seal the contest in their favour.

With this win, the Maldives moved to third place in the points table behind leaders Nepal and Bangladesh.
