GALLANT SRI LANKA HOLDS INDIA TO A 0-0 DRAW

- BY SUSIL PREMALAL - REPORTING FROM MALDIVES

Sri Lanka put up a gallant performance to hold India to a historic 0-0 draw in their SAFF Football Tournament match played at the National Stadium in the Maldives yesterday.

Sri Lanka’s performance in this game had a great amount of significance as they were able to hold the Indian Team to a draw after a lapse of 18 years (2003).

Overall this was a tremendous improvement from the Sri Lankan Team as they were under pressure going into this game having suffered two defeats at the hands of Bangladesh (0-1) and Nepal (2-3) respectively.

But this time they managed to produce their best performance in the tournament with star player Dukson Puslas claiming the Man-of-thematch Award.

The other significant fact is that India have won this title on seven previous occasions and are also very much ahead of the Lankans in the FIFA Rankings. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka’s last league fixture in the tournament will be against the Maldives on October 10.
