Steps will be taken to import inorganic fertiliser: State Minister

A stock of 9,000 metric tons of chemical fertiliser is available in the country at present and steps will be taken to import more fertiliser to meet the demand,state Minister of Minor Export Crops Developmen­t- Janaka Wakkumbura told the media

He said steps were being taken to boost maize cultivatio­n to make the country self sufficient in maize and that organic fertiliser mixed with imported liquid nitrogen would supplied to the maize cultivator­s. He said more than 5,000 farmers had registered themselves to cultivate maize crop and that they would be entitled to the concession­s provided by the government through the Agrarian Services Centres in the respective areas.

The State Minister further said step had been taken to cultivate 100,000 hectares of maize during the next Maha season.
