● Says media cannot be controlled by censorship or by laws
No government has survived in the world by applying censorship on media or imposing laws to control them, Mass Media Minister Dullas Alahapperuma said. Addressing a convention held to mark the 67th Anniversary of the Sri Lanka Press Association (SLPA) at Sri Lanka Foundation Institute on Tuesday evening, the minister said governments which tried to suppress media by laws and apply censorship on them have ended up in the dustbin.“it is my belief that media cannot be controlled by censorship or by laws,” he said.
At the same time, Minister Alahapperuma said media personnel should not work towards safeguarding the image of their bosses and towards fulfilling their political aspirations. “Media has to think of their readers and viewers. This is relevant to state media as well. The SLPA felicitated five veteran media personalities at its anniversary by honouring them with D. F. Kariyakarawana Memorial Award.
