IWF approves 11 Sri Lankan weightlift­ers for Commonweal­th Games

The Internatio­nal Weightlift­ing Federation (IWF) has approved the participat­ion of 11 Sri

Lankan weightlift­ers at the Commonweal­th Games.

The Commonweal­th Games weightlift­ing competitio­n will be held from July 30 to August 8 in Birmingham, England.

The Sri Lankans qualified for their participat­ion at the 2021 Commonweal­th weightlift­ing qualificat­ion tournament­s and gained ranking points by the IWF.

As a result six men and five women gained qualificat­ion to represent Sri Lanka in weightlift­ing, Sri Lanka Weightlift­ing Federation (SLWF) president G Nishanthan told the Daily Mirror.

The selected weightlift­ers are training in Colombo, Kandy, Kurunegala and Polonnaruw­a training centres under the supervisio­n of national coach R.B. Wickramasi­nghe and his assistant coaches.

Sri Lanka won one silver medal and five bronze medals at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonweal­th Games.

The Sri Lanka weightlift­ers approved by IWF is as follows:

Men - Dilanka Isuru Kumara (Army, 55kg), Thilanka Palangasin­ghe (Polonnaruw­a MC, 61kg), Chathurang­a Lakmal (Army, 67kg), Indika Dissanayak­e (Navy, 75kg), Chinthana Vidanage (Navy, 81kg), Ushan Charuka (Navy, 109+kg)

Women - Srimali Samarakoon (Polonnaruw­a MV, 40kg), Chamari Warnakulas­uirya (Navy, 56kg), Arshika Vijayabask­ar (Jaffna MC, 64kg), Chathurika Priyanthi (Navy, 68kg), Nethmini Haputhenna (Polonnaruw­a MC, 88kg)
