IWF approves 11 Sri Lankan weightlifters for Commonwealth Games
The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) has approved the participation of 11 Sri
Lankan weightlifters at the Commonwealth Games.
The Commonwealth Games weightlifting competition will be held from July 30 to August 8 in Birmingham, England.
The Sri Lankans qualified for their participation at the 2021 Commonwealth weightlifting qualification tournaments and gained ranking points by the IWF.
As a result six men and five women gained qualification to represent Sri Lanka in weightlifting, Sri Lanka Weightlifting Federation (SLWF) president G Nishanthan told the Daily Mirror.
The selected weightlifters are training in Colombo, Kandy, Kurunegala and Polonnaruwa training centres under the supervision of national coach R.B. Wickramasinghe and his assistant coaches.
Sri Lanka won one silver medal and five bronze medals at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
The Sri Lanka weightlifters approved by IWF is as follows:
Men - Dilanka Isuru Kumara (Army, 55kg), Thilanka Palangasinghe (Polonnaruwa MC, 61kg), Chathuranga Lakmal (Army, 67kg), Indika Dissanayake (Navy, 75kg), Chinthana Vidanage (Navy, 81kg), Ushan Charuka (Navy, 109+kg)
Women - Srimali Samarakoon (Polonnaruwa MV, 40kg), Chamari Warnakulasuirya (Navy, 56kg), Arshika Vijayabaskar (Jaffna MC, 64kg), Chathurika Priyanthi (Navy, 68kg), Nethmini Haputhenna (Polonnaruwa MC, 88kg)
