BASL MEETS PRESIDENT AND PRIME MINISTER

The Management Committee of the Bar Associatio­n of Sri Lanka (BASL) yesterday met President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa to discuss the BASL proposals to restore political and economic stability in the country.

In a statement, BASL announced that it drew the attention of the President and the Prime Minister regarding the urgency in establishi­ng political stability in the country. The BASL has explained its proposals including the formation of a Government of national unity.

During the meeting, BASL President Saliya Pieris has informed President Rajapaksa regarding their stance against the Declaratio­n of the State of Emergency. The BASL also met representa­tives of the independen­t group of parliament­arians headed by former President Maithripal­a Sirisena.

The BASL Management Committee also met representa­tives of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) headed by the Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa.“the BASL explained the framework of its proposals and answered queries as to their implementa­tion.all parties appreciate­d the role played by the BASL in respect of the present crisis. They also shared their concerns and presented their own proposals which have been submitted either to Parliament or to the President,” the BASL statement added.

This statement had been issued under the signatures of BASL President Saliya Pieris PC and its Secretary Isuru Balapatabe­ndi.
