Story of Elephants in the World

- BY DR A.S.ABEYRATNE

This book describes how the elephants evolved in the world and covers their history till the present day in Asia and Africa. Elephants are the largest land animals the world ever had. It is hard to believe that elephants first came to America, a long time ago and from there they migrated to many countries and ultimately ended up by forming two breeds, African and Asian Elephants. Scientific information started developing for domesticated animals like cattle, goats, horses who produced a mass amount of food and income to humans. Scientists commenced studies on reproduction of elephants about two decades ago and today adequate scientific data and information is available. The most recent scientific activity stated on elephants is semen collection and artificial breeding. Sri Lanka commenced collecting elephant semen by veterinarians in 1990. But the artificial feeding was never continued. During the past 30 years the author Dr A.s.abeyratne has been collecting information on elephants regularly for 30 years.
