National netball pool to be reduced to 15 after second selection trial

- SUSIL PREMALAL

The Netball Federation of Sri Lanka (NFSL) has decided to reduce the national netball pool to 15.

This is in view of the 12th Asian Netball Championship to be held in Singapore from September 3 to10 organised by the Asian Netball Federation.

The second selection trial of the national pool was held on May 9 at the Indoor Stadium, Bandaragama.

The trials were delayed because members of the national selection committee were appointed after two months.

Chairperson netball selection committee Damayanthi Jayathilaka has decided to axe seven players following their performance at the second selection trial.

Three players who could not participate in the second selection trial have given medical certificates and will be considered in future, she added.

NFSL hopes to select the final Sri Lanka squad on June 30.

Twelve countries are expected to take part in this year’s Asian Netball Championship including Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Thailand.

Sri Lanka has emerged champions in this tournament the most number of times.
