Catchments in the hydropower reservoir have been receiving high rainfall for the last two days. Nuwara Eliya District Assistant Director of Disaster Management Ranjith Alahakoon said Laxapana and Wimalasurendra reservoirs were spilling over and that three spill gates in the Laxapana reservoir were open to release excess water to the Kelani river. He said the spilling over of the two reservoirs had swelled the river. Meanwhile the water level in Maussakele and Castlereigh reservoirs has been rising fast. Engineers in charge of the reservoirs said the water level in Maussakele reservoirs had risen by 82ft by last morning and it stood 27ft below the spill level. Laxapana, New Laxapana, Canyon, Wimalasurendra and Polpitiya hydropower reservoirs are fed by Maussakele and Castlereigh reservoirs.
