Doctors too have “Conflict of Interests”

-

A Doctor has the right to abstain from treating any patient he dislikes as he may give the wrong medication due to prejudice.

Have you seen some learned judges refuse to hear a case. I have seen several such cases as judges think they may give a wrong favourable judgement against a litigant on the defence or accused side who may be closely or distantly related to them. In order to avoid such a calamity which would sometimes plunge the country to an abyss learned judges do this sometimes when the occasion demands such an action.

situation

It’s called conflict of interest Medical doctors I have closely associated in the

1950s as friends, avoided treating their own family members when the ailment goes beyond Paracetamol treatment. Why is this? This is an unwritten term in code of ethics for doctors. But now it’s not followed by young doctors I think.

Dr. Jayawardana must be having a revulsion against politicos specially under the current Galle Face protest situation. A

Dr. is not comfortable in treating a patient who has done something against the country or innocent people. Saddam Hussain had this issue if I remember right. Dr. J is not the only specialist in the field of cosmetics or diet in Sri Lanka.. In the back of his mind he may have known that he could not reduce the enormous waist line of this politico. So he is right in his refusal to treat the patient. Similarly, I too as a patient seeking specialist treatment for 20 odd years have my own list of Hitler type medical specialists whom I hate and will not recommend for any one.

Therefore Dr. J did the right thing in the politicos case and no organisation can take any action against him as he did it due to conflict of interest as in a case of the Judiciary. SUMITH DE SILVA
